Where are you?

After Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, the Bible tells us, “Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?"  (Genesis 3:9)

Now, why do you suppose God asked that question?  Do you suppose the omniscient God of the universe lost track of the only two people on planet earth?  I think not.

God did not ask the question so He could discover where Adam and Eve were but so Adam and Eve would discover where they were.  God already knew exactly where they were - hiding in the bushes.  Adam and Eve had no idea where their sin had taken them and the enormous consequences for their wrongdoing.

Throughout the Scripture, God challenges us with similar statements, like…“What is your life?”  (James 4:14) and “Come now, and let us reason together,” says the Lord”.  (Isaiah 1:18)  God is calling us to make a self-evaluation.  He knows exactly where we are in our Christian experience.  He simply wants us to come face-to-face with ourselves in the mirror of God’s Word.

Speaking of mirrors, do you remember what James writes about mirrors?  Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, James writes, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.”  (James 1:22-24)

As you look into the mirror of God’s Word today, what do you see or, in the words of the Creator, “Where are you?”  Where are you in your Christian journey?  I did not ask how long you have been on the road but, rather, how far you have traveled.

Just prior to crossing the proverbial “finish line”, the fervor of the Apostle Paul was the same as it had been in the early days of his Christian walk: “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection”.  (Philippians 3:10)  Paul still had the “peddle to the metal” when it came to his spiritual race.  His mind was still set on, “This one thing I do”.  (Philippians 3:13)  That is why he could write, “I have finished the race” (2 Timothy 4:7).

Where are you today?  Are you closer to the Lord today than a year ago?  A month ago?  A week ago?  Is your prayer still, “That I may know Him”?  My challenge for you this week is to draw closer to the Lord than ever before.  Walk in greater obedience than ever.  Pray more than ever.  Read your Bible more than ever.  Witness more than ever.

Walk so close to the Lord that the next time He asks, “Where are you?” you can say, “Right here Lord – right beside you- closer than ever”.

Have a blessed day.
